With its low prices, great safety record, and charming pink mustaches, Lyft has become one of the greatest transportation network companies in the US. Lyft’s mission is to increase efficiency and affordability of transit, while simultaneously fostering relationships within the communities it serves by pairing customers with drivers from their neighborhood. Founded in 2012, the San Francisco-based company has been making transportation easier and more reliable, as well as “making cities feel smaller and better connected” since its birth. Mary Caroline Pruitt, a Communications Associate at Lyft, provided some intriguing insight into the missions and goals of the company. Pruitt says, “By connecting drivers and passengers, and facilitating human connection, Lyft breaks societal constrictions and social boundaries down and brings people together through elegant and easy-to-use technology.”
The miserable inefficiency and exorbitant costs of private transportation are the driving factors behind the company’s mission. Pruitt explained that, “80% of seats on our highways are empty, and car ownership is the second highest household expense for families today.” Lyft hopes to “fill those empty seats [and] eliminate traffic.” In this way, Lyft’s mission converges with national efforts to improve environmental sustainability and promote ridesharing programs. Lyft’s beautifully designed and easily accessible app helps the company achieve this goal – with a quick click of a button a car will arrive at your doorstep. Pruitt says, “Lyft is great for everyone with a smartphone looking for a safe and reliable ride.” Lyft’s ability to appeal to such a large demographic has enabled the company’s current successes and will surely enhance its future growth.
Aside from the bright pink mustache that proudly adorns the front bender of each car, Lyft distinguishes itself from competitors through the precedence it places on community. Drivers use their own cars and choose when they work. Pruitt says, “From the moment they hop into the car, passengers see how Lyft is more than just a ride. Passengers are encouraged to sit up front and every Lyft ride begins with an introductory fist bump. Passengers can also charge their phones and choose their own music.” These are just a few examples of how Lyft strives to create the “ultimate community experience.”
In terms of the company’s future, Lyft will strive to “use existing infrastructure and innovative technology to make transportation more efficient and ultimately reduce the need to own a car.” The company currently operates in 68 cities, and continues to expand across the country. Lyft Line and Lyft Plus, services that allow passengers to carpool in the same direction and request larger cars, respectively, provide even more customization for any individual’s Lyft transportation experience. So, whenever you need a ride, just look to Lyft – and get ready for great conversation, low fees, and of course, the classic fist bump to start the drive!
