On Thursday, November 13, the Beeck Center hosted the Landegger Program Presentation on Global Women in Entrepreneurship, an event run by graduate students to bring to light the importance of women in entrepreneurship. At 6:00 PM, the event began with a very informal meet-and-greet where attendees snacked on hors d’oeuvres and sipped on wine while engaging in conversation with fellow guests. The room filled with MBA candidates looking to gain a unique perspective on starting an entrepreneurial venture, as well as a distinct opportunity to network with other professors and entrepreneurs in attendance.
While the program was directed toward women, there were a few men in the audience who boasted keen interest in promoting the event’s mission. At around 6:45 PM, representatives from various graduate student groups took to the floor to introduce the night’s keynote speaker. The speaker for the night was Jane Mosbacher Morris, a Georgetown graduate who, after years of working on humanitarian efforts, decided to launch her own business called TO THE MARKET.
TO THE MARKET is a social enterprise that brings hand-made goods of survivors of disease, abuse, and conflict around the world “to the market” in online, pop-up, and custom sourcing capacities. Mosbacher Morris talked about the importance engaging in in-depth research where one can fill a gap in an already established non-profit sector and make a meaningful impact with one’s social enterprise.
“After my due diligence period, I found that there was a gap. The gap was in helping these organizations, that were employing survivors, tap a broad market reach within the US “ said Mosbacher Morris about the added value she felt she could bring to the social enterprise community. She cited that women in the United States are the most socially conscious consumers, so she could serve as an intermediary to these foreign survivors and their target customer.
Following the speech, attendees got to participate in a networking session where guests could ask questions of the speaker and other representatives of TO THE MARKET while purchasing merchandise from the pop-up shop the company set up in the Beeck Center. This event was sponsored by Georgetown Women in International Affairs, Georgetown Graduate Women in Business, and Startup Hoyas.
